Democratic Presidential candidate John Kerry today called for a new commitment to conservation in order to strengthen the local communities and economies that depend on America's precious natural resources. Following a tour where he witnessed firsthand the deterioration of Louisiana's coast, Kerry specifically focused in on a new series of steps he will take to protect America's coastlines and the economies that depend on them.
Today in Louisiana, John Kerry talked about the importance of conservation to America's sportsmen and announced the formation of Sportsmen for Kerry, a new effort by hunters and fishermen across America to join Kerry in fighting for rich habitats and abundant wildlife.

"Before this commission reported, I laid out a program to actually take oil and gas revenues in order to use them for that very purpose - to create the energy conservation trust fund that we need to protect ourselves for the long term future. And I pledge to you that I will make the protection of our coastlines the national priority that I have made them throughout my Senate career because a secure coastline means a secure future for the families who live here, the business owners who make a living here, and the sportsmen who hunt and fish here.
"As a lifelong hunter and a fisherman, I began fishing as a lot of kids in this country do with my dad as a young kid. I fished freshwater and I fished saltwater. And as a hunter, I'm pleased also to be here today to announce the formation of Sportsmen for Kerry and it's great to see so many sportsmen who are here today to be part of this effort. In the months ahead, I look forward to reaching out to sportsmen all across our country who understand that we need to join together to fight for the habitat, for the abundant habitat, that's necessary in order to be able to enjoy the fishing and hunting that we want to for the future. And the economy of places like Louisiana that are dependent on attracting people who come to do that require us to show that kind of responsibility."
